High pressure pump is usually a reciprocating plunger pump. It may be triplex, quintuplex or other type designated by the number of cylinders. The pump moves liquid by mean of suction it from one end and discharge it to another end. This action causes changes in volume and pressure that is expressed by the following curves.

This curve represents pressure fluctuation in a single cylinder. The pressure start to rise at the beginning of the discharge stroke, reaches the peek slightly above 90 degrees and then goes down to zero at 180 degrees.

This curve represents a common discharge (or suction) of a triplex (three cylinder) pump. The combination of the three plungers and their change in velocity cause this kind of fluctuations.
